Jiří Made between 2008 and 2010 I fitted the building of Jiri in around family life and tried not to get too obsessed with it (with limited success). I am quite please with the result. Jiří has the 19th century look with all the modern gurdy playability. The 4 chanters of low C, low g, violin d' and high g' give a great range in the musical key possibilities. I have been impressed with the sympathetic strings resonance. Having a full 12 sympathetic strings really gives a fullness. The 3 dogs are very worth while as they each have a particular characteristic to their pitch. Having capos and string lifters is a must with this setup. They let you use the most strings in many musical key setups. The Delacour sharping levers that I have chosen for the drone capos are very solid and easy to set up and use. As are the Peghed pegs for ease of use and the authentic older look.

April 2011 - I have finally setled on this string combination. It gives a good balance of tone, relative volume and string displacement. The prices are in Australian$ and approximately what I payed for them in late 2010. Hurdy Gurdy Strings
The high chanters have a violin tone and clarity while the low chanters have a soft warm tone. The harp strings work well for the trompettes, with the high trompettes giving a light crisp buzz and the low g trompette giving a quite prominent rattle/buzz. The low drones have a full cello resonance to them. The steel sympathetic strings lightly ring for ever behind the melody.
